Monday 17th June

K Cobbett: Little Ringed Plover.

Colin Varndell: Common Darter (first of the year).

We ringed the two eldest Barn Owlets today - both are very healthy and developing well.

Unfortunately the third Barn Owlet had to be removed from the nest box and taken to a rescue centre - his face had been covered by a black growth since hatching, he was blind, and suffering from an unknown disease. Unfortunately, the vets took the decision to euthanise the very sick owlet.

We would not normally intervene, and the poorly owlet would have starved to death in the nestbox once their siblings had fledged, and possibly be eaten by them, potentially passing on any disease.

Following advice from the BTO, a local wildlife rescue centre and vets, we took the decision to intervene this time, in order to aid the successful development of the two healthy owlets. All actions were undertaken under license from Natural England and in consultation with the BTO.

The parents can now concentrate on ensuring the remaining two owlets both get enough food and can fledge in a few weeks time.
